This time, we will introduce the wines of Georgia, a historic wine country located in Eastern Europe.

[GEORGIA]

《Georgian Grape Varieties》

Georgian Grape Varieties

○. There are 525 grape varieties native to Georgia

The names of Georgian grape varieties often indicate their origin or distinctive characteristics.

There are at least 525 varieties native to Georgia, but many varieties were lost to cultivation due to collectivization during the Stalin era and Gorbachev's anti-alcohol campaign in the 1980s.

Today, only 45 varieties are grown commercially.

The Georgian government is currently working to increase the genetic diversity of grapes in the country, and in 2014 launched a program to support the cultivation of rare grape varieties, in parallel with academic research and experiments on older varieties.

That summer, the National Wine Agency distributed 7,000 seedlings to wine growers.

Today we'll talk about tools.

Marani Tools Winery Tools

[Orsimo]

The orsimo (ladle) is a traditional tool used to scoop wine from a qvevri.

They are made by hollowing out the inside of a wild pumpkin or gourd and attaching a long wooden handle to it.

They can be found in both eastern and western Georgia, but copper versions like the one pictured are extremely rare.

[Kurazana]

Krazana is a type of brush used to wash qvevri in eastern Georgia.

It is made from St. John's wort (Hypericum Perforatum), which is called "Krazana" in Georgian.

Rubbing a qvevri with its roots also has antiseptic properties.

Some qvevri can be washed, but they cannot be used until the following year.

It is particularly suitable for polishing large qvevri that require people to step inside to wash them.

[Cup "Marani"]

Traditional clay cup.

It was used for special toasts at special banquets, but is rare today.

[Sake vessels]

Copper vessels are used in Georgian people's daily lives, but vessels called "tashi" and "piara" are used only for drinking wine at banquets.

They come in a variety of shapes, some with legs called "heels" and others with flat bottoms.

The surface is often plated with tin.

[Saruch]

A type of brush made by pressing and stacking the bark of sweet cherry trees and attaching a long handle.

Used to polish the inside of the qvevri.

They are also made from other types of cherry and sometimes birch bark.

Saltsukhi, which have two short handles so that they can be held with both hands while washing, are common in western Georgia but rare in the east.

[Avgardani]

A tool consisting of a small copper basin with a long wooden handle.

It is used to scoop water, sediment, and remaining wine from the bottom of a qvevri after washing it.

It is common in Kakheti, but similar tools in various forms are used in all wine-producing regions of Georgia.

That's all for today.

Thank you for reading to the end today.

See you again next time on the Lafleur de Suligier blog! (o^^o)
