This time, we will introduce the wines of Georgia, a historic wine country located in Eastern Europe.

[GEORGIA]

Georgia

Georgia, with its diverse natural environment, has excellent conditions for the development of high-quality grape cultivation and winemaking. The country is divided into the following regions based on the characteristics of grape cultivation and winemaking.

Abkhazia

・Samegrelo

Racha

・Rechifumi

Imereti

Glia

・Achara

Meskheti

・Cartoli

AJARA Achara

The Atjara region is located in the southwestern part of Georgia, at the foot of the Lesser Caucasus Mountains, facing the Black Sea, and is a historical region that is administratively an autonomous republic.

It is an important tourist region bordering the Guria region to the north, the Samtskhe-Javakheti region to the east, and Turkey to the south, and its center is Batumi, Georgia's second largest city.

Most of the Atjara region is mountainous, with peaks over 3,000m high, and approximately 60% of the area is covered by forest.

The Achal region is known for its humid climate and heavy rainfall, especially along the Black Sea coast.

It is the rainiest region not only in Georgia but in the entire Caucasus, and is one of the wettest temperate regions in the Northern Hemisphere.

The most rainfall usually occurs between September and October.

On the other hand, there is plenty of sunshine in spring and summer.

The inland area is much drier than the coastal areas, with average summer temperatures ranging from 22-24°C and winter temperatures ranging from 4-6°C.

In the coastal hills and in the Kobuleti and Khelvachauri districts, the soil is mostly yellow or greyish-white.

Pleistocene deposits are rare.

The lower reaches of the Acharistukari River often have greyish-white soils, while the mountain forests in the upper reaches are predominantly (heavy) clay soils and gravel, and the banks of the river valleys are alluvial.

Carbonaceous humic substances are not found in the Achara region.

Grape cultivation and wine production

In the Athara region, where grapes have been cultivated for a long time, new vineyards are currently being developed.

The restoration of old vineyards is underway.

Recently, there has been a movement to revive old grape varieties.
