MESKHETI Part 1
[Geography]
The Meskhetia region is located in southern Georgia, bordering the Imereti and Kartli regions to the north, Turkey to the south, and Achara and Guria regions to the west.
The main cities are Akhaltsikhe, Aspinza, and Adigeni, and the region is divided into three districts. Grapes have long been cultivated in this region on the slopes of the valleys along the Mtkvuali River and its tributaries. The region is divided into three areas by altitude: lowlands (900-1,000m), mid-highlands (1,000-1,200m), and highlands (1,200-1,400m).
[climate]
It has the most continental climate in the country, with a steppe-like landscape that is even more pronounced in the lowlands of Kartli and Gale-Kakheti.
It exhibits a somewhat dry, subtropical mountain climate, with cold but little snow in the winter and mildly hot long summers.
The climate of the Akhaltsikhe region is unique, with an average temperature of 8-9°C and an annual rainfall of only 400-520mm.
This is the driest of Georgia's wine-growing regions, and irrigation is essential for grape cultivation. Rainfall is concentrated in the summer.
Due to the harsh winter temperatures, grapes were traditionally buried in the ground.
The fact that vineyards are often terraced helps protect the grapes from frost.
[Soil type]
The soils in the area along the Mtkvari River are carbonaceous alluvial deposits overlain by gravel or other layers, and are rich in clay.
At altitudes of 1,400-1,500m, the soil is mostly clayey and rich in clay.
These are grey-brown meadows or brown forests. These brown soils are ideal for growing grapes and are widespread throughout the Meskhetian region.
Soil erosion caused by deforestation and other factors is a major problem in this region, and terracing and reforestation are effective countermeasures.
Artificial terraced fields that have been composted for hundreds of years must be treated as special soils.
