Georgia, with its diverse natural environment, has excellent conditions for the development of high-quality grape cultivation and winemaking. The country is divided into the following regions based on the characteristics of grape cultivation and winemaking.

MESKHETI Part 2
[Grape cultivation and wine production]
The Meskheti region is the highest viticultural region in Georgia, and possibly in the world.
Grapes are grown at altitudes between 900 and 1,700 metres.
What many people find hard to explain is that the vineyards in this region begin at an altitude of 900 metres.
According to Shalva Tykhvadze, author of a book on winemaking in the Meskhetian region, grapes grow particularly well on the left bank of the Mtkvari River and on the south-, southeast- and southwest-facing slopes of the Potsukhovy and Kvabriany rivers.
The region is known for its long hours of sunshine, which allows the grapes to bud early and store a lot of sugar.
This results in wines of higher quality than those grown on terraces on the right bank of the river, in what the locals call "the shadow land."
Meskhetia is Georgia's oldest wine-growing region
Some experts believe that this is one of the regions where the ancient Georgian varieties Saperavi, Zershavi and Khivvi originated.
After the Ottoman invasion of the Principality of Samts in 1578, winemaking in the region gradually declined.
Nevertheless, according to a 1595 document, the current Aspinza region produced about 10,000-12,000 tons per year (compared to the current annual harvest of the entire Kakheti region of about 100,000 tons).
Approximately 120,000 tons of grapes were harvested.
Winemaking in this region only became popular again in the 1940s and 1950s.
The well-known researchers Maxime Ramishvili and David Tabidze investigated the viticultural potential and indigenous grape varieties in the Meskhetian region in the 1930s and 1940s, but their findings were not properly utilized by the Soviet government.
New varieties such as Gorlimtsvane, Tsinuri, Rkatsiteli, Pinot, Aligoté and Khiví were introduced and Meskheti began to produce mainly sparkling wines.
To this day, most vineyards in the Meskhetian region are terraced.
Today, only one winery, Natenadze, produces small quantities of Meskhetian wine due to the small area of vineyards.
In other words, the future of grape cultivation and winemaking in the Meskheti region depends on it.
