GURIA - SAMEGRELO

○.Geography

The Guria region is a small, independent-minded community in southwest Georgia.

The altitude gradually decreases from the Lesser Caucasus Mountains in the southeast to the Black Sea in the west.

Meanwhile, the Samegrelo region is a historical region in western Georgia, traditionally known as Mingrelia in English.

It is bordered by Abkhazia to the northwest, Svaneti to the north, Imereti to the east, Guria to the south, and the Black Sea to the west.

○ Climate

The Gurian region is humid in the subtropical coastal areas, the lowlands at an altitude of 200m, and the mountainous areas in the east.

The climate is characterized by hot summers and mild winters with strong winds.

The Samegrelo region is also subtropical and generally humid.

The foothills of the Greater Caucasus Mountains in the north are ideal for wine production because of their high altitude, low precipitation, and easterly winds that reduce humidity.

○ Soil type

In the main grape-growing and wine-producing areas of the Samegrelo region, the soils are white limestone (upper basin of the Tephra and Abasha rivers) and rich in peat soils.

The lowlands are made of carbonaceous alluvial deposits mixed with stones eroded by the river, and are clayey and sandy.

The foothills are usually covered with a layer of peat beneath a carbonaceous surface, with lots of gravel, limestone and peat deposits exposed.

○. Grape cultivation and wine production

The earliest records of Georgian wine come from Colchis, and the Guria Samegrelo region has been a wine-growing center since ancient times.

Two foreigners played a major role in the current wine production in these two regions.

In the Greer region, it is the Scottish Jacob Malle, and in the Samegrelo region, it is the Frenchman Achille Murat.

In the 1820s, Jacob Mar moved to the village of Bukisti in Guria (Chokhatauri district) and cultivated highland varieties such as Jani, Schiratubani and Mutevandidi to produce wine.

Meanwhile, Asir Myura was one of the first to establish a European-style wine company in Georgia.

His cultivated varieties Ozaresi and Kurakhna were brought to the Imereti region, where their cultivation became widespread.

The region of Guria Sameclero is characterized by the practice of growing grapevines on tall vines, a method that prevailed until the 19th century.

Also, harvesting in these regions has traditionally been late, starting in late November and sometimes continuing until the end of January.
