PDO Wine Attenuri

The name of the wine "Atenuri", made by mixing cinuri and gorli mtsvane, was already famous in the Middle Ages.

Attenuri is also known as a naturally sparkling wine.

The grapes used for Atenuri were harvested late, and the pressed wine was transported to the cool highlands of the Athens Valley and stored in special vats.

People often brought ice from the river to keep the wine cool so that fermentation would proceed slowly.

The result is a wine of remarkable refinement, clarity and lightness.

[IMERETI]

○.Geography

Imereti region is located in western Georgia, in the middle and upper reaches of the Rioni River.

The area ranges from humid subtropical regions to alpine grasslands at an altitude of 2,850m, and is home to numerous health resorts and mineral springs.

Imereti is one of the most diverse wine-growing regions.

A variety of wines are produced that reflect the climate and soil environment.

○ Climate

The Imerti region has three distinct climates, with humid subtropical and humid subarctic being the most common. The lowlands, part of the Kolheti Plain, have a subtropical maritime climate with warm winters and hot summers. The average annual air temperature is 11-15°C. Zemo Imereti is a humid subarctic region with cold winters and heavy precipitation.

○.Regional classification

Zemo (top) Imeretishur (middle) Imeretian

Kvemo (Lower) Imereti

○ Soil type

Humus-based calcareous rendzina soils, yellowish-brown to dark red forest soils, stagnant hydrous alisols, and subtropical podzols.

○. Grape cultivation and wine production

Imereti, 70% of whose land area is mountainous, has a wide variety of climates and soils, making it one of the most diverse wine-producing regions.

The most widely grown grapes in the Imereti region are Tsitska and Tsorikouli, which are often pressed together to produce excellent wines.

Krakhna is also a well-known white grape variety.

Among red wines, those made from Otshanuri Sapele grapes are popular.

Winemaking

As in other regions, qvevri is traditionally used. In Imereti, qvevri is called "čuri." However, unlike the Kakheti method, only part of the pomace is used. After fermentation, the wine is left in the čuri for about a month before being transferred to barrels for aging.

Imereti wines have a beautiful yellow colour and a harmonious, lively taste.
