Part 3
[1889 AD]
Achille Murat opened the vineyard and later bottled the first Ojareshi in 1893.
[1890s]
The Chavchavadze family estate has been producing PDO wines since the 1830s, which are still popular today.
By the early 1890s, Tsinandali, Mukuzani, Napareuli and Teliani varieties were in regular production.
[19th century]
Participation in international wine exhibitions gave Europeans their first exposure to Georgian wine and brandy. At the 1900 Paris World's Fair, newspapers of the time reported that Georgian wine already had a significant presence in Europe.
[Early 1900s]
Georgia's wine industry has developed rapidly, with hundreds of varieties of wine now being produced across the country.
[1918 to 1921]
During the brief period of independence, winegrowers' associations and community businesses further developed.
[1929 AD]
The national organization to manage Georgia's wine industry, Samtrest (the predecessor of the current National Wine Agency), is established.
[1930s-1940s]
Georgia produces around 60 types of wine using traditional methods.
[1950 AD]

Soviet-style mass production led to the replacement of many varieties with higher-yielding hybrids.
The damage to Georgia's wine industry has been profound.
[1985 AD]
The Soviet prohibition of alcohol lasted for three years.
[1993-1999]
A new era in the history of Georgian wine begins. Blessed by bountiful grape harvests, modern commercial wineries such as GWS, Teliani Valley, Tvirvino and Telavi Wine Cellars are established.
[After 2005]
The production of organic and biodynamic wines begins to spread to Western markets.
[March 2006]
Russia announced an embargo on Georgian products. Georgian wines improved in quality and opened up other markets.
