◎. Georgian Wine Timeline
Part 2
[10th to 13th century AD]
Georgia's Golden Age of Grape and Wine Production
Grape varieties became more diverse and many wineries were established.
[After the 16th century AD]
Georgian viticulture survived the Mongol invasion.
New wineries were built and trade with neighboring countries resumed.
[1669 AD]
The French traveller Jean Chardin visited Georgia in 1669.
According to travelogues, excellent wine from Kakheti was exported in large quantities to the Armenian and Isfahan courts at 8 francs a box. Chardin, praising the quality of Georgian wine, wrote:
...so wonderful
Nowhere is more wine drunk than in Georgia. - Jean Chardin
[1820s-1830s]
European winemaking methods began to be introduced to Georgia. Thanks to the efforts of Alexandre Chavchavadze, Georgian wines came closer to their European counterparts by the end of the 1830s, and the first European-style wineries were established in eastern and western Georgia.
[1830s]
Alexandre Chavchavadze invested 1 million rubles to purchase the Chacha stills and kuvets.
The underground winery, equipped with oak barrels and vulcanized wines, was built in Tsinandali.
The total number of bottles reached 17,000.
These include French wines that are 150 to 200 years old and Saperavi, which was made between 1839 and 1841.
The white wine "Tsinandali" (PDO: Protected Designation of Origin) has been produced since 1886.
[1850s-1860s]
Grape diseases such as powdery mildew became widespread, peaking in the 1880s, and the grape phylloxera (Phylloxera) became widespread in the late 19th century.
[1870s]
Prince Ivanemhlanbatoni built a large winery in the village of Mhlani.
The wine was highly valued within the Russian Empire and was also exported to France and Poland. Georgia's first sparkling wine was also produced.
[1870s]
The characteristics of Georgian grape varieties are described for the first time in a Paris publication.
[1882 AD]
Renowned Kakheti winemaker Zakaria Djordjadze built a winery with dozens of qvevri and oak barrels for aging traditional wines.
Combining traditional methods with new technology, he has taken Georgian winemaking to new heights.
[1884 AD]
David Saradzishvili opens Georgia's first brandy distillery in Tbilisi.
[1880s]
Trademarked Georgian wines, the forerunners of today's PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) wines, were released both domestically and internationally.
"Tsinandali" had been produced since the 1830s, but was only trademarked in 1886.
That's all for today.
This will be continued next time!
Thank you for reading to the end today.
