Part 1
[6,000 BC]
Ancient grape seeds recently unearthed at an archaeological site south of Tbilisi have provided evidence that grape cultivation and winemaking were practiced in Georgia as early as the 6th millennium BC. The seeds are of the same species as Vitis vinifera sativa.
Pottery that is thought to be the prototype of the qvevri was also found at the same site. Chemical analysis of the pottery revealed calcium tartrate, which is nothing but traces of wine. Pottery from this period often has grapes depicted on it.

Ancient site belonging to the Kura-Arax culture of the Early Bronze Age
Grape seeds have been found in the Iori River basin.

The remains show the evolution of small qvevri-type pottery.

The baby was found in the village of Digomi near Tbilisi.
[8th century BC]
Grape cultivation developed in both eastern and western Georgia. According to ancient Greek records, Colchis was not only known for its gold mining, but the Greeks also enjoyed Colchis's excellent wine. Colchis' wine is also mentioned in Homer's "Odyssey." Odysseus' beautiful mistress, the sister of King Aeetes of Colchis, entertained her guests with Colchis' wine. The guests drank the ruby-colored wine from silver cups.

During the Early Iron Age, the qvevri took on their present form.

Many qvevri from this period have been found throughout Georgia. Western and eastern qvevri differ greatly in shape, color and decoration.
[4th-3rd century BC]
The base of the qvevri gradually becomes pointed to withstand the pressure of the surrounding soil, and the qvevri becomes larger.
[3rd century BC]
The Argonautica by Apollonius Rhodius (3rd century BC) is the ancient Greek myth of the theft of the Golden Fleece from Colchis, in which the Argonauts witness various miracles, including a spring of wine, at the palace of Aeetes, the king of Colchis.
[Around the beginning of the 4th century AD]
When Christianity became the state religion in Georgia, grapes and wine took on special significance in both religious ceremonies and everyday life.
From the early Middle Ages onwards, religious authority led to the formation of small administrative units consisting of churches, vineyards and irrigation channels. Christianity greatly promoted the development of grape cultivation in Georgia, and wine was actively produced in churches and monasteries. Wine had been an essential part of people's lives since ancient times.
[After the 4th century AD]
Wineries can be seen in every town from the 4th century onwards. The winery in Nekreshi (eastern Kakheti) in particular was originally a 200m2 hall that was part of a palace and was converted into a winery in the 4th century. Five stone presses were installed along the wall, and it is thought that it was possible to press up to 10 tons of grapes at a time.
